And that’s okay! He finds a mentor in Julius, someone who serves as the tough, seasoned hunter you see throughout the games, and he does well in this role because that’s what he is in the games. Aiden starts out as a bumbling little fool, because we all start the game as bumbling little fools.
He works perfectly in this role because his personality and story is already ingrained in the lore of the story, and it closely matches how a player grows and learns in the game. Aiden is meant to be a player stand-in, but he is also a character from the games that fans will recognize. It does a pretty good job of setting up the world of Monster Hunter in a way that is accurate to the game, but also more than understandable and interesting to a viewer who has never played a single Monster Hunter game.Īnd then there are the characters. Monsters are just a part of life for the people in the film, and it’s thoroughly explained that you’re not supposed to just run around killing monsters for the hell of it. You’re in a village, a newly minted hunter, and you’re being asked to help the people of the village with their monster problems.
It doesn’t try to equate the world of the game to something closer to our reality or try to convolute it it starts the films exactly how you would start the game. That description alone highlights the most important things the film gets right: the setting and characters. With the aid of a handful of professional hunters, the villagers begin preparing for the siege, and Aiden is on his way to becoming a full-fledged hunter. He meets seasoned hunter, Julius ( Brando Eaton), who despite his blunt and slightly cold personality, decides to stay and help Aiden and the villagers face off against an Elder Dragon.
