Lieutenant Stevens was assigned to the base hospital at Travis Air Force Base in California. Lieutenant Irwin flew 88 combat missions in the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt with the Ninth Air Force in Europe during World War II. Trained as a fighter pilot, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant 3 November 1942.
